Drive revenue and member engagement through mobile apps.
Mobile apps are transforming how nonprofits and associations engage with members by providing personalized communication, real-time access to resources, and streamlined management of memberships and payments. They also support learning, simplify administration, and foster networking through in-app communities. Investing in a mobile app can be a game-changer, enhancing user engagement and retention with interactive content, offline functionality, and advanced device features that keep organizations connected to members and users where they want to connect.
AH partners with nonprofits, associations and credentialing bodies to develop different types of apps to achieve their goals and mission. As a result, these apps have benefitted the organizations by:
- Increasing engagement and satisfaction of users.
- Leading to higher renewal rates and increased membership.
- Providing non-dues revenue opportunities.
Mobile App Types
When developing a mobile app, associations and non-profit organizations have a few key options depending on their needs, target audience, budget and intended functionality. The primary options for developing mobile apps include: Web apps, Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) and Native Mobile Apps. Each has its own advantages and applications.

Web Apps
A web application (Web App) is accessed through a web browser, with an internet connection and using a phone’s Wifi or data. It is not downloaded from one of the app stores. For the most part web apps look and behave like native mobile apps. Web apps make sense when an internet connection is readily available and when phone features are not needed (e.g., GPS, notifications, etc.). They can be a great option when development cost is a primary consideration and when the level of complexity and planned feature set is low.
AH has developed a number of “Web Apps” for various clients, ranging from assessment tools (based on specific algorithms) to reference material apps that integrate with a membership database (AMS) and restrict access to specific purchases, and more. These apps don’t require downloading, are accessible with an internet connection and provide access across all devices (phone, tablet, laptop/desktop). These apps tend to be information rich and do not require special capabilities available on a native mobile device such as GPS, camera or notifications.
Progressive Web Apps (PWAs)
While traditional web apps operate within a browser, PWAs can provide a more native-like experience, closely resembling native mobile apps. PWAs can be installed on a device's home screen, run in a standalone window, and even access certain device features, such as push notifications and geolocation. PWAs typically offer lower development and maintenance costs than native apps and a more app-like experience without the need for a separate native app. They are also a good choice for quicker development and when availability across all devices is important.
Native Mobile Apps
Native apps are built specifically for a particular platform (e.g., iOS or Android) using platform-specific programming languages and tools. These apps are distributed through app stores and provide the best performance and access to all device features. When high complexity and performance, and a highly polished user experience are key, this is usually the best option. Correspondingly, it comes at a higher cost and typically can require a longer time for development.
AH works closely with its nonprofit and association client partners to help them navigate the process for developing mobile apps that engage and delight users. We’ve also assumed different roles in that development process, from actual development to consulting on AMS integration with apps and to managing projects with other third-party app platforms. For example, AH helped one association consult and provide project management for development of a year-round membership app. Additionally, in conjunction with custom event microsites, we’ve developed companion event mobile apps (native and web) that synchronize between the database and websites for content, attendees and more.
