How NBCSN Turned a 40th Anniversary Into a Certification Growth Campaign
A declining application pipeline is rarely a marketing problem on the surface. Often it appears as apathy, or competing priorities, or a workforce that's simply too busy to prioritize credentialing. But underneath, it's often a connection problem: people have lost sight of why the credential mattered to them in the first place.
That was the challenge facing the National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN). Certification applications were declining, signaling a need to reconnect school nurses with the value and purpose of credentialing. Without renewed engagement, the pipeline risked continued decline.
Who Is NBCSN?
The National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN), established in 1985, develops and administers the Nationally Certified School Nurse (NCSN) credential, the national standard for school nursing certification. NBCSN has partnered with Association Headquarters (AH) since 2018 to manage its day-to-day operations.
In 2022, NBCSN launched its Exam Voucher program, which encouraged school districts to devote COVID funds to professional development and reached 5,000 NCSNs. As they approached their 40th anniversary year in 2025, the organization had grown to more than 6,000 NCSNs. It introduced the NCSN Scholarship, supporting school nurses from historically marginalized communities in preparing for and taking the certification exam.
The Challenge
Certification applications were declining, signaling a need to reconnect school nurses with the value and purpose of credentialing. The decline created a clear need to generate greater interest in the remaining two exam administrations and encourage qualified school nurses to prioritize certification.
NBCSN’s 40th anniversary provided a timely opportunity to address that challenge. The organization needed a campaign that could honor the contributions of certified school nurses while showing prospective applicants what the credential represents in practice.
The Approach: Connecting NBCSN’s History to Current Practice
Rather than treating the 40th anniversary as a simple commemorative milestone, AH and NBCSN developed the anniversary as a campaign platform rather than treating it as a single commemorative event.
The campaign combined storytelling, member testimonials, and event activation, giving school nurses a way to see their own work reflected in NBCSN's 40-year history rather than treating certification as an abstract administrative requirement.
By leading with legacy and emotional connection, the organization reflected a broader principle AH has seen play out across its association clients: people renew and re-engage with organizations that make them feel part of something meaningful, not just organizations that remind them of a deadline.
The Results
Why It Worked
NBCSN didn't respond to a declining pipeline with a harder sell. It responded by reminding certificants and prospective applicants why the credential mattered in the first place by using 40 years of institutional history as proof rather than just promotional copy.
Storytelling and testimonials work because they replace an abstract value proposition with a concrete, human one: not just a rundown of “why you should get certified,” but “here's what this credential has meant to people like you, for four decades.” That distinction is what turned a milestone anniversary into a measurable re-engagement campaign.
