With the recent Presidential election, all of the incidents involving law enforcement around the country, as well as what seems like daily allegations of mismanagement, etc. , the topic of leadership is regularly trending. What makes a truly great leader is something that is always up for discussion but as I look at the many so-called leaders I can’t stop myself from wondering-where are those that are truly outstanding?
Harry Truman was quoted as saying, “Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is not leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.”
At a time when it seems as though there are regular protests what we need right now are some really good leaders. But globally, we fail to find strong and competent leaders.
There have been many opportunities (unfortunately) to address issues of civil unrest, the stress between communities and law enforcement, and of course the clear political divide within our country. Engagement and leadership from those we elect-both locally and nationally-has been noticeably absent. Instead of trying to calm crowds, these “leaders” seem to further ignite already explosive situations.
This is no longer a time to sit back and expect someone else to step into the void, or expect that any one person can tackle all that we are facing. It’s going to take all of us – no matter what industry or profession, or our individual role, we all must seize the opportunity to be positive, and support one another, show more empathy and provide leadership even when no one is looking.
I watch on television as millions of people protest in areas all over the country to let their voice be heard. I applaud their dedication. I support their determination. I challenge them to take this one moment and do something positive with it. Continue, in whatever way possible to let your voices be heard while remembering that you can be heard without making a single sound.
If each of us do as Truman stated and apply our skills and courage to make change for the better, I believe we can elevate our country and our society to the place our forefathers intended.
