The surprising turn of events that led me to AH!

In a second, life changed! I was at my 19 year old son’s hockey game, standing next to his best friend’s dad, whom we have known for 15 years. We were having a great time when all of a sudden he had a massive heart attack and my son’s best friend’s father died at my feet. “How could this happen? He was only 53.”

My mind began to race. What if this was my husband; my son’s father? How would I cope and deal with such tragedy? How would you cope? All was surreal, I felt somewhat removed, reminding myself it was happening to somebody else and not me.  What I didn’t realize was how this event would have such a profound impact on mine and my son’s lives. The mixed feelings, the questions, and the realization that life is too short and how important it was to be true to yourself.

I decided to quit my job because it became so vital to me that I work for a company that met my core values. My son was playing junior hockey full time and decided to quit and join the U.S. Coast Guard because he wanted to save people’s lives. Both of us were in search of something more. Simultaneously, our searches began.

For me, the resumes, the interviews, the rejection letters, nothing was connecting; that was until, I interviewed and accepted a job at AH. For my son it was the interviews, the screenings and the stringent testing. His process was tedious and stressful, but he prevailed and was accepted.

This self-discovery brought us closer together. The ups, the downs and the uncertainty was unsettling, but what was profoundly clear to the both of us was that our values were the same. We are both so very lucky to have found jobs that match our core values.

We now remain "Semper Paratus" which is Coast Guard lingo for, “Always Ready.” As we go through the next phase, Boot Camp and a probationary period here at AH, we are both confident that we will be very successful in all that we do and are excited to see just where our new adventures lead us.

As you reflect on your own life and your core values: What do you do? Do you to stop waiting for life to happen to you, or do you make life happen? Do you wait for change, or do you create change?

Life is so very precious no matter your age. Are you living the life you want to live? If not, have the courage and make a change.
