AH Client Partner Initiative Awarded with ASAE Silver Award for its Support Surface Algorithm

MOUNT LAUREL, NJ – July 8, 2015 – AH client partner, The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses (WOCN®) Society has earned a 2015 ASAE Power of A Silver Award for its development of an evidence-based support surface algorithm, clinical guidance for clinicians selecting the appropriate support surface for their patients as they recuperate.

“We are very excited to have earned this very prestigious award on behalf of our valued client partner and AH,” said AH CEO Robert Waller, Jr. CAE. “This recognition speaks to the efforts and abilities of our staff and the trust our client partners have with us to try new, innovative and creative initiatives.”

The program addresses the complex process of preventing and treating pressure ulcers, bed sores, that many clinicians manage in their daily practices. A number of appropriate support surfaces, the material on which a bed-ridden patient must lie, are available but choosing the right one requires considerable thought and careful patient evaluation.

The support surface selection algorithm project is an ideal example of how a nursing association and its supporters can effect change on a national scale,” said Carolyn Watts, MSN, RN, CWON, WOCN Society President and member of the Algorithm Development Task Force. “Countless patients will benefit from the new standardization the task force created and the mobile version of the tool which their caregivers can access quickly and conveniently.”

Once the algorithm was completed and its content validated, the task force published it in the peer-reviewed Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing. After publication, WOCN Society staff worked closely with the task force to create an electronic mobile version of the algorithm. With the electronic version of the algorithm, clinicians can now use the algorithm on their mobile devices, allowing them access to a validated, expert-level tool to evaluate patients at bedside. Hill-Rom provided support for the development of the algorithm.

ASAE’s Power of A (association) Awards, the industry’s highest honor, recognize the association community’s valuable contributions on the local, national and global level.
