On November 14-15, 2018, AH held its annual Leadership Forum event. This educational event is designed specifically for volunteer leaders of AH’s client partners to provide timely information on issues affecting their association, non-profit or certification body.
During this two-day educational forum, items discussed included:
- Association industry trends, changes, and issues
- The dynamics of creating and maintaining a successful team
- How technology can at the same time support and disrupt organizations
- Meeting trends and opportunities
Below are the 2018 Red Chair Award winners as well as the runners-up.
Multi-dimensional Growth
National Center for Homeopathy (NCH)NCH has experienced tremendous growth over the past year; they’ve seen a 283% increase in new individual members, 90% increase in Organizational membership, 900% increase in lifetime members and new Student memberships. NCH also experienced a 17.9% increase in new followers on social media especially related to advocacy efforts by NCH to create awareness around the draft guidance proposed by the FDA: Drug Products Labeled as Homeopathic Guidance for FDA Staff and Industry.
Intelligent Use of Technology
Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA)JPMA introduced a new technology to the JPMA Baby Show, Poken, which acted primarily as a lead retrieval mechanism, providing exhibitors with the opportunity to track and connect with both trade and consumer attendees. This platform enabled exhibitors to evaluate the return on their participation, and attendees the ability to collect digital collateral. Attendees and exhibitors alike were sent auto-generated daily recap emails that included the information they collected that day. This technology allowed JPMA to track attendance at various educational sessions, to better plan for future events. All attendee badges were connected to the technology via RFID.
Engaged and Disciplined Leadership
Controlled Release Society (CRS)Faced with the challenge of its AMC resigning, the CRS Board stepped up to keep its Society functioning. January 2018 AH began providing full services. The transition with minimal, and in many cases no documentation for programs and services was overcome by an encouraged, disciplined CRS volunteer leadership. Their historical knowledge, documents and long-standing membership experience was key. The July Annual Scientific Meeting with Abstracts, multiple educational tracks, trade show for 1200 attendees was successful. Committees engaged to maintain travel grants while expanding programs and services for Young Scientists. Leadership’s engagement remains engaged and disciplined to promote CRS’s science globally.
Unwavering Commitment to Mission
National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA)NADCA’s mission is to represent qualified companies engaged in the inspection, cleaning and restoration of HVAC systems and to be the number one resource for consumers and other entities seeking air duct cleaning services. In support of this mission, NADCA established the Breathing Clean Campaign to help combat fraudulent companies taking advantage of unsuspecting homeowners within the growing air duct cleaning industry. Breathing Clean includes a consumer hub on NADCA’s website, video PSAs and social media marketing to share helpful resources to educate consumers. To date, the Breathing Clean Campaign has reached 244 million readers.

Multi-dimensional Growth
The Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN Society)WOCN developed the Wound Treatment Associate (WTA) Program and the Ostomy Care Associate (OCA) Program to further empower wound, ostomy and continence (WOC) nurses and to improve patient outcomes. The tools enhance general knowledge of both wound and ostomy care for entire nursing teams and other healthcare professionals. Both programs are evidence-based online courses that meet international standards of care and prepare non-specialty nurses to provide optimal care for people undergoing ostomy surgery and/or people with non-healing wounds.

Nurses Organization of Veterans Affairs (NOVA)The Nurses Organization of Veterans Affairs (NOVA) is a nationwide, nonprofit, professional organization of nurses who are employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers and Clinics. To overcome challenges in reaching members and prospective members through traditional communication channels, NOVA has utilized innovative social media technology to expand its reach and member engagement to promote member benefits, advocacy and professional development opportunities. NOVA has demonstrated that even with a small budget, innovative use of technology can help associations overcome big obstacles!
American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA)
As part of a nationwide 3 tier training program, AMCA developed a series of interactive eLearning modules that serve not only as a learning tool but also a knowledge reinforcement tool. The modules consist of a voiceover narrative and visual images with learning checkpoints throughout the module. A feedback mechanism was built into the program to serve as a knowledge reinforcement tool. As users progress through the eModules, they follow the journey of Lindsay, a biology student starting a summer internship program at a local mosquito control district. Upon completion of the emodules Lindsay (and the user) is armed with the necessary knowledge to enter the professional field of mosquito control and apply the integrated mosquito management practices appropriately. All four emodules were designed and built to meet 508 compliancy which is part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This technology allows electronic and information technology to be accessible to people with disabilities.
Engaged and Disciplined Leadership
Insurance Society of Philadelphia (ISOP)The Insurance Society of Philadelphia, established in 1901 – has long been an educational organization for Philadelphia Insurance and Risk Management professionals. The Leadership recognized the changing environment and the need for change in mission before the association’s viability and sustainability become an issue. By facing issues head on the Association is setting a course for success.
Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC)
ABSNC is the only accrediting body specifically for nursing certification. ABSNC accreditation is a peer-review mechanism for nursing certification organizations that demonstrate compliance with the most rigorous industry standards. After becoming an AH client partner, they quickly set about long-desired changes. A Strategic Planning session was conducted and the board committed to achieving both long and short term goals. Various task forces were established and within the past year, they have adopted new bylaws with extensive revisions, comprehensively revised standards for exam-based accreditation and have completed review of the policy and procedures manual, making significant changes.

American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI)ASHI took part, and increased participation, in Medical Laboratory Professionals Week by recognizing the work of those in histocompatibility laboratories and by creating and implementing fun activities that brought additional exposure to the organization and the field.
